Robert Pai, leading researcher of Compact Fluorescent Light bulbs (CFLs), announced
his retirement recently from Osram Sylvania, prompting industry insiders to take a second look at the years of research and innovation that Pai has brought to the field.
As green living begins to dictate consumer behaviors, there is a noticeable industry
shift. No doubt CFLs are providing a green alternative to incandescents, but the technology still hasn’t proved itself to the more discerning.

Why does it matter? Depends on who you ask. From a consumer prospective, a
light bulb isn’t just a light bulb. Energy efficient lights can save hundreds on energy
bills, but CFLs cannot operate with dimmers, a feature that has become standard in many re-designed and newly constructed homes. Stylistically, lighting fixtures that incorporate CFLs are currently limited. In an industry where style is synonymous with function, it is a dramatic disadvantage.

On the other hand, there is the science. Complexities in light diffusion, color
capabilities and heat distribution limit the capabilities of newer LEDs. Pai muses that waiting on the horizon are light-emitting diodes, a technology that is considerably more expensive (currently), but has the potential to surpass the energy efficiency of the
CFLs, as well as the light and stylistic qualities of the incandescents.

Navigating the sea of ever-changing technology can be tricky; fortunately at Wolfers
we make it our business to understand the trends, as well as how each can translate
to help you and your clients.

Energy Tip
May 1, 2008 a new law will go into effect in Massachusetts. (Massachusetts Mercury Management Act). From that point, it will be illegal to dispose of anything that contains mercury. If you go to sylvania.com, you will find ways to properly recycle all your fluorescent lamps including CFLs.
